After just over 13 hours of poker action, Day 1a of the 2010 Aussie Millions Main Event has come to a close with the last hand of the night being dealt!

94 players are currently bagging and tagging their chips in preparation for a return to the felt on Wednesday for Day 2 action.

Those that unluckily fell to the rail throughout the tough and gruelling day included international visitors Brian ‘Flawless_Victory’ Roberts, Raymond Rahme, Phil Ivey and Jesse Metcalfe along with local players Tino Lechich, David Saab, Con Tsapkounis and Jay ‘SEABEAST’ Kinkade.

Leading the 94 players into Day 2 is Ronny Kaiser with 117,000 in chips, but is closely followed by Sorel ‘1mper1um’ Mizzi (112,300) and Zach Gruneberg (105,000). Not to be outdone however is Barry Greenstein (74,100), David Steicke (74,000), Gus Hansen (53,900) and local players Luke McLean (55,100), Julian Cohen (50,900).

Make sure to join us tomorrow from 12:30pm where a mixture of online qualifiers and Team 888poker players such as Shane Warne, Jeff Fenech, Andy Lee and Leo Margets will be hitting the felt to battle it out with the world’s best from the 2010 Aussie Millions!

Dinner Bell Rings
Written by Tim Duckworth at 8:50pm

The dinner bell has rung on Day 1a of the 2010 Aussie Millions Main Event!

233 players took to the felt today, but only 160 have snuck through after four levels of play to take a well-earned 75-minute break as they scurry through the buffet lines or jostle for tables in the food court.

Many of game’s big names mixed it up with a wealth of local grinders, online whiz kids and amateurs including 2007 Aussie Millions Champion Gus Hansen, multiple WSOP bracelet winner Phil Ivey and astute poker author ‘Action’ Dan Harrington.

There was a celebrity or two in the field including Hollywood heartthrob Jesse Metcalfe of Desperate Housewives fame, but unfortunately the only 888poker online qualifier in today’s field was eliminated on the first hand of play.

Per Anton Bertilsson saw a flop of 5c-Ad-As and called a check-raise after firing out a continuation bet to see the 8h land on the turn. Both he and his opponent saw all their chips hit the centre of the felt with Bertilsson tabling his Ah-Ks to be behind John Course’s 5s-5d.

Sadly for Bertilsson he was unable to improve when the river peeled the 10c to see the 888poker online qualifier head out the door after only being dealt – and playing – one hand in the Aussie Millions Main Event!

With play now back underway and three levels remaining in the day, players are going to begin their climb up the leaderboard before the chips are bagged and tagged.
